WTO Agreements

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) was created in 1995 as a successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). It is the main global institution establishing and administering rules for trade in commodities and it provides for this to be done on a non-discriminatory basis.  In the main, these agreements require domestic legislation, regulations and administrative practices to be compliant with WTO rules.

We provide advice to governments, trade associations and other interested stakeholders on the various WTO Agreements and of the compliance of domestic laws with WTO rules. Advice and counseling also covers the stages of dispute settlement from consultation to the implementation stage of recommendations and rulings of the panel and Appellate Body. This includes assisting governments to implement the WTO Agreements by drafting WTO compliant legislation, internal regulations and the conduct of training sessions for officials involved in putting in place WTO compliant measures.
